A major Civic Society project during the 100th anniversary of World War I was the restoration of the former school war memorial at what was once the entrance to Blandford Secondary/Grammar School in Damory Street (now Wessex Court).
An interpretation board now details the site’s history and remembers whose from the school who gave their lives during the war.
In the process we realised the site to the south had served as the town’s burial ground during the first half of the 19th century, and considerable research was undertaken to create the interpretation board which now stands at its entrance.
More work is planned since there is considerable scope for further investigation in terms of archaeology, social and family history, as well as its future, and members of the Civic Group are working to progress the project. They’d like to hear from anyone interested in helping, and particularly from anyone whose relatives may have been buried there.
